How to keep your tan through
autumn and winter

The holiday colour goes first, usually by mid October. It does not have to. Here is why tans fade faster once the clocks change, and the small routine that keeps yours going until spring.

1-2sessions a week to hold a base you have already built
~1 monthfor your skin to replace its surface layer
Dailymoisturiser, the cheapest part of the plan
0reasons to go longer because it is cold outside
Your tan lives in the top layer of your skin. When that layer sheds, the colour goes with it.
Autumn makes the shedding patchy. Central heating, hot showers and wind all dry skin out.
Maintenance is fewer sessions, not longer ones. One or two a week, same length, accelerator on.
Moisturiser is doing half the work. Hydrated skin sheds evenly instead of in dry patches.

Part one

Why your tan fades faster in autumn

A tan is melanin in the upper layers of your skin. Your skin replaces that surface roughly every month, so every tan is on a timer from the day you stop topping it up. Nothing stops that, and anyone who says otherwise is selling you something.

What autumn changes is the speed and the evenness. Less daylight means no casual top-ups. Central heating and hot showers dry the skin, and dry skin flakes off in patches. Jumpers and jeans rub the same spots all day. The result is a tan that goes blotchy before it goes, which is the bit people actually notice.

You are not losing the tan because it is winter. You are losing it because the routine stopped when the holiday did.

Part two

The maintenance plan

Once you have a base, the job changes from building to holding. That takes less than people expect.

One or two sessions a week. Within your salon's guidance, with a day or more between them. More than that is building, not maintaining.
Same session length. Cold weather is not a reason to go longer. A burn in November sets you back just as far as one in July.
Accelerator every time. Each session counts for more, so you need fewer of them. A 10p sized amount per area for a cream, 5p for Sun Sauce.
Keep the rhythm. Two sessions in one week and none for three is how a tan fades unevenly.

Sessions a week to keep the colour you already paid for.

Plenty of people switch to Sun Sauce for the colder months. It is an oil free jelly, it absorbs in a minute, and it does not leave anything on your skin to rub off on a jumper.

Part three

The skincare that keeps it

Lukewarm showers. Hot water strips oil from your skin and makes the flaking worse.
Pat dry, do not rub. A towel rubbed hard is a very gentle exfoliator you did not ask for.
Moisturise every day. Straight after the shower, while your skin is still slightly damp.
Exfoliate gently, once a week. The day before a session, not the same day, so you take colour on fresh skin without scrubbing the rest of it off.

The full version of this is in how long does a tan last. The short version: a tan on well kept skin fades evenly, so it never gets that half-gone look.

Part four

Starting from pale in autumn

If the holiday colour has already gone, you are building again, and that works the same in October as it does in May. Two or three sessions a week for two to three weeks, an accelerator before each one, then drop to maintenance. How many sunbed sessions it takes has the week by week plan.

To be clear about what we are not saying: no cream, jelly or supplement stops your skin renewing itself, and nothing keeps a tan without UV. What a routine does is make each session count and make the colour fade evenly when it does go. That is the whole claim.

Quick answers

Frequently asked

Does a tan fade faster in winter?
It fades at the same biological pace, roughly as fast as your skin replaces its surface. What changes is that you stop topping it up, and heating and hot showers dry your skin out, so it sheds less evenly.
How many sunbed sessions a week keep a tan in winter?
Once you have a base, one or two sessions a week within your salon's guidance is enough for most people. You are maintaining now, not building.
Should I switch accelerator for autumn?
You do not have to. Some people move to a jelly like Sun Sauce because it absorbs fast and sits well under layers. Whatever you use, use it every session.
Is it worth starting a tan in October?
Yes, it just takes the same two to three weeks it always does. Build the base first, then drop to maintenance.
