Christmas Party Tan: A Six-Week Sunbed Countdown

Christmas Party Tan: A Six-Week Sunbed Countdown - Delux Tanners
Party season

Six weeks to the party.
Real colour, no streaks.

The usual Christmas party tan comes out of a bottle the night before and ends up on the dress. This is the other route: a real tan built on the sunbed, counted back from the date, with nothing on the surface to transfer, streak or change shade under the flash. Start this week and the maths works. Leave it to December and it gets tight.

Quick answer: for a real Christmas party tan, start six weeks out. Two or three short sunbed sessions a week for three to four weeks, with a tan accelerator on clean, dry skin before each one, builds a base for most people. Then drop to one or two sessions a week to hold it, have your last session two or three days before the party, and moisturise every day. Never chase colour with longer sessions. A burn sets you back further than a missed week.

Part one

Why six weeks, and why now

Colour from UV is not instant. Your skin makes melanin in response to each session, and a base you would actually call a tan takes two to three weeks of regular sessions for most people. The full breakdown is in how many sunbed sessions it takes to get a tan.

Six weeks covers that, plus the cold, the manic week and the fully booked salon November always throws in. It also means you never have to rush. Rushing is where people burn.

Why not a bottle tan on the night? It is a fair option and plenty of people use it. It sits on top of the skin, though, so it can come off on pale fabric, streak at the wrists and ankles, and photograph a different shade under flash. A real tan is in the skin. There is nothing to come off.
Why not just go longer on the bed? Longer sessions do not build a base faster. They raise the chance of burning, and a burn peels away the colour you already had. A burn is not a tan.
Why start this week? Winter skin is drier and sheds faster. Starting early gives you time to get the skin in shape as well as the colour.
The party is a date in the diary. So is the tan, if you count backwards.

The six-week Christmas party tan countdown

Counted back from a party in the second week of December. Slide it to fit your date.

Weeks 6 and 5: prep and prime. Exfoliate before your first session so the colour lands on even skin (how to prep). Two or three short sessions a week at your salon's starter length. A tan accelerator before each one, a 10p-sized amount per area, spread thin until it disappears. Moisturiser every night. Do not expect much yet. This is the groundwork.
Weeks 4 and 3: build. Same rhythm. This is where most people see it. Step the session length up only if your salon says so. Keep exfoliating gently once or twice a week so dry patches do not take colour unevenly.
Week 2: hold. The base is there. Drop to one or two sessions a week, accelerator still on before each. Moisturise morning and night, because central heating is drying your skin out while you sleep.
Party week: finish. One session early in the week, the last one two or three days before the party. Then nothing but moisturiser. The details are in part three.

Which formula suits winter party prep?
Our Next-Gen creams, Island Coconut, Electric Melon and Vanilla Paradise, carry melanin actives alongside skincare such as ceramide and squalane, which suits drier winter skin. Sun Sauce is a jelly with our highest concentration of tanning actives, used at a 5p-sized amount. Go Dark is the original conditioning cream and the easy place to start. Not sure? A 20ml sachet lets you try a Next-Gen cream first. How much of each to use.
Do not forget the face, neck and chest
Party outfits show the neckline, and that is where a body-only tan gives itself away. Lumière goes on at a pea-sized amount for the face, with a second pea for the neck and chest. Any Delux cream is fine on the face, Lumière just suits thinner facial skin better. How to tan your face on a sunbed.
Tropic Like It's Hot, for experienced tanners only
Our tingle accelerator is for experienced tanners only. Patch test a small area 24 hours before first use, never put it on the face, and keep it off broken, sensitive or freshly shaved or waxed skin. Wash your hands straight after. Six weeks out is not the moment to try a tingle for the first time. Start with a Next-Gen cream.

Part three

Party week: the last few days

Most of the work is done by now. Party week is about not undoing it.

Last session two to three days before. Colour can keep developing for a day or so after a session, and any warmth has time to settle. Turning up an hour off the bed, still glowing pink, is not the look.
Exfoliate early in the week, gently. A soft mitt or a mild scrub two or three days out smooths the surface. Skip the harsh scrub the night before.
Moisturise the morning of. Hydrated skin looks smoother, and the colour looks richer on it. Dry, flaky skin makes any tan look tired.
Shower as normal. There is no bronzer on your skin, so there is nothing to rinse away. How long after a sunbed you can shower.
Wear the pale outfit. White shirt, cream dress, the borrowed coat. Nothing on the surface means nothing to mark it.
White shirt, cream dress, borrowed coat. Nothing comes off on any of it.

Part four

Short on time?

Party in under three weeks. You will still see a change. With an accelerator, most of our customers notice it after two or three sessions. Keep the same rhythm and do not add sessions or minutes to catch up. Aim for a glow rather than a full base.
Party this weekend. A sunbed course cannot do six weeks of work in three days, and trying is how people burn. Moisturise, go with the colour you have, and start the countdown for New Year's Eve instead.
Never tanned before? Read your first sunbed session first. Sunbeds are for over-18s only in the UK, and if your skin always burns and never tans, a sunbed is not for you.

The honest bit

A bottle tan is faster. If the party is tomorrow, it is the only thing that gets you there, and there is no shame in that. What it cannot do is sit inside the skin, last the weekend evenly, or survive a white shirt. If you have six weeks, you do not need it.

The calendar is doing most of the work. Let it.

Quick answers

Frequently asked

How far in advance should I start tanning for a Christmas party?
Six weeks is ideal. It gives most people the two to three weeks of regular sessions a base needs, with room for missed sessions and a gentle finish. Three weeks is the realistic minimum for a proper base.
How many sunbed sessions do I need before a party?
Two or three short sessions a week for three to four weeks builds a base for most people. With a tan accelerator, many people notice a change after two or three sessions. Then one or two sessions a week holds it.
When should my last sunbed session be before an event?
Two to three days before. Colour can keep developing for a day or so after a session, and it gives any warmth time to settle before the night.
Will a sunbed tan come off on my clothes?
No. A tan built with UV is in the skin, so there is nothing on the surface to transfer. Products with bronzer or DHA can mark fabric. Delux formulas contain no bronzer and no DHA.
How do I keep my party tan until New Year?
One or two sessions a week with an accelerator before each, and moisturiser every day. Winter skin sheds faster, so moisturising does a lot of the holding.
