A Burn Is Not a Tan: Why Going Red Sets Your Colour Back

A Burn Is Not a Tan: Why Going Red Sets Your Colour Back - Delux Tanners
Tanning guide

A burn is not a tan.
Going red sets your colour back.

Somewhere along the way, plenty of tanners picked up the idea that a burn fades into a tan, so a bit of redness means it is working. As a brand whose entire job is deep colour, let us kill that one properly, because it is costing people the exact result they want.

Part one

What is actually happening when you burn

A tan and a burn are two different responses to UV. The tan is your skin producing melanin, real colour, built from within. The burn is inflammation: your skin has taken more UV than it can handle and is injured. The redness is not colour developing, it is damage showing. And because burnt skin repairs itself by peeling, the surface where your colour lives literally sheds. Whatever tan you had going peels off with it, patchy and uneven.

The redness is not colour developing. It is damage showing. And damage peels.

Part two

If you have burnt: what to do

Get out of the sun and stay out until your skin has fully recovered. Cool the area, moisturise generously and keep your skin hydrated inside and out, leave any peeling alone rather than picking, and do not put tanning products or more exposure on damaged skin. Skip the sunbed until it has completely settled. If a burn blisters badly, covers a large area or comes with feeling unwell, get medical advice. Your colour has taken a step back; let your skin heal properly before you resume building it.

Part three

The route that actually gets you darker

Here is the part the burn-chasers miss: gradual is faster. Moderate, consistent, protected exposure builds colour session after session with nothing lost to peeling, which is why the routine tanners out-tan the tanmaxxers within a few weeks. Prep your skin, apply a tan accelerator before every session so each one counts for more, wear sunscreen outdoors, because you absolutely tan through it, and moisturise daily. Our accelerators contain no DHA and no bronzer, so every bit of colour you build this way is yours, and it stays.
