Can you tan through sunscreen?
Yes, and here is why.

It is the belief driving half the risky behaviour on tanning TikTok: that sunscreen blocks your tan, so if you want colour you have to go without. It sounds logical. It is also wrong, and it is costing people their skin for no benefit at all.

Sunscreen reduces UV, it does not block it completely.
Enough UV still reaches your skin to build a tan.
Skipping SPF just means burning first, tanning less.
Accelerator first, sunscreen on top, colour builds either way.

Part one

How sunscreen actually works

No sunscreen is a wall. Even high SPF filters reduce the UV reaching your skin rather than eliminating it, especially in real-world conditions where people under-apply and forget to top up. That remaining exposure is still enough for your skin to respond to, which is why people come back from a fortnight of diligent SPF wearing with a visible tan. The colour arrives more gradually, but it arrives on healthy, unburnt skin, which is exactly the surface that holds a tan longest.

No sunscreen is a wall. It is a filter. What gets through is enough to build colour on skin that is not burning.

Part two

Why skipping it gets you less colour, not more

Go without protection and the first thing your skin does in strong sun is not tan deeper, it burns sooner. A burn is inflammation and damage, and burnt skin peels, taking your developing colour with it. So the no-SPF shortcut routinely produces less lasting colour than the protected route, on top of the damage itself. We cover the recovery side in a burn is not a tan, and the trend pushing this myth in our tanmaxxing explainer.

Part three

The routine that gets both

You do not have to choose between protection and colour. Apply your tan accelerator first to clean, dry skin, ours contain no DHA and no bronzer and support your skin's own melanin process, then apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen over the top and reapply it through the day. The accelerator helps your skin make the most of the UV that gets through; the sunscreen keeps that exposure on the right side of a burn. Island Coconut was built for exactly this holiday routine, and neither it nor any accelerator contains SPF, so the sunscreen step is genuinely non-negotiable.
