How Long Does a Tan Last, and How to Keep It

How Long Does a Tan Last, and How to Keep It - Delux Tanners
Aftercare guide

How long does a tan last,
and how do you keep it?

You spent two weeks building it. Here is the honest answer on how long it stays, why it goes, and the small habits that keep it looking good for as long as it lasts.

7-10days before an untended tan visibly fades
~4weeks for your skin's surface to fully renew
1habit that matters most: moisturise daily
0to wash off, because there is no tint in a Delux tan
A real tan lives in your skin's surface, and that surface replaces itself roughly every four weeks.
Most tans start to fade after a week to ten days without maintenance, and are mostly gone in three to four.
Hydrated skin fades evenly. Dry skin sheds in patches.
Regular short top-ups beat one long session when the colour dips.

Part one

The honest timeline

A tan is melanin your skin has produced in its outer layers in response to UV. Those outer layers are constantly being replaced, on a cycle of roughly four weeks for most adults, and faster if you scrub hard. So the colour is on a clock from the moment you build it. Left alone, a tan usually looks its best for the first week, starts to soften after seven to ten days, and has largely gone by the end of week three or four. Keep topping it up and look after your skin, and you can hold the good colour for two or three weeks, with an even fade after that.

Your skin replaces its surface about every four weeks. The tan is on that clock. Top-ups keep it. Aftercare keeps it even.

Part two

Why a tan fades

Two things take colour away: cell turnover, which you cannot stop, and dryness, which you can. Dry skin does not shed cleanly. It builds up and comes away in flakes and patches, taking your colour with it unevenly. That is why a tan looks patchy as it goes rather than fading evenly, and why the driest zones, shins, elbows, knees, lose colour first. Harsh scrubs take colour off faster. Hot showers, chlorine and long soaks dry the skin out and make the fade patchier. Hydration keeps it even.

Part three

How to keep it

Moisturise every day, ideally straight after showering while skin is still damp. It is what keeps the fade even.
Keep showers warm, not scalding. Hot water dries the skin and makes the fade patchy.
Pause the heavy scrubs. A gentle wash is fine. An exfoliating mitt is taking your tan off, one pass at a time.
Drink water and mind the chlorine. Rinse after the pool and moisturise after.
Keep using your accelerator when you do get exposure, so any top-up session counts for more.

Part four

What shortens it

Burning, first and worst. A burn peels, and peeling skin takes the tan with it, which is why a burn is not a tan. After that, anything that dries or strips the skin: long hot baths, harsh soaps, heavy exfoliation, unmoisturised days. And fake tan on top, which sits on the surface and comes off in patches, taking the illusion of your real colour with it. A Delux tan has no DHA and no bronzer, so there is nothing sitting on the surface to wash away unevenly. What fades is only ever your own skin, at its own pace.

Part five

Topping up

When the colour dips, the temptation is one long session to bring it back. Resist it. A short, regular top-up with your accelerator applied first builds the colour back evenly without the burn risk. On a sunbed that means staying in your usual rhythm within your salon's guidance. Outdoors it means a sensible session with sunscreen over your accelerator. Our sunbed guide and holiday guide cover the rhythm in detail.

Quick answers

Frequently asked

How long does a sunbed tan last?
Similar to a sun tan: the good colour for one to two weeks, most of it gone in three to four, unless you maintain it with moisturiser and regular short sessions.
Does moisturising really make a tan last longer?
It will not make it last longer, because your skin renews on its own schedule whatever you put on it. What it does is stop dry skin flaking off in patches, so the colour fades evenly and looks good for as long as it lasts. It is the cheapest habit in the routine.
Why is my tan fading in patches?
Skin sheds most unevenly where it is driest, usually shins, knees and elbows. Moisturise those zones twice a day and go easy on scrubbing.
Does a tan accelerator make a tan last longer?
Not on its own. Your skin renews on its own schedule whatever you put on it. What an accelerator does is make each top-up session count for more, and the conditioning core in Delux creams keeps skin smooth so the colour fades evenly.
