Does a Tan Accelerator Work Without Sun or a Sunbed?
Does a tan accelerator work
without the sun?
It lands in our inbox most weeks, usually worded something like this: do I have to be in the sun or on a sunbed, or can I just rub the cream on and let it build? Does a tan accelerator work without sun? The short answer is no, and a tube that gives you colour without UV has something else in its ingredients. The longer answer is more useful, so here it is.
Part one
Why a tan accelerator needs UV to work
A tan is your skin's response to UV light. When UV reaches it, the pigment cells deep in the skin are signalled to make melanin, and that melanin is moved up into the cells you can see. That is the tan. No UV, no signal. No signal, no new melanin.
A tan accelerator does not start that process. It supports it. A good formula supplies building blocks such as acetyl tyrosine, a form of the amino acid skin turns into melanin, and helpers for the other steps along the way. Think of it as stocking the kitchen. It does not cook the meal. UV does that.
Part two
So why do some creams seem to tan you with no sunbed?
Because some of them do give colour without UV, and it is worth knowing where it comes from. If a cream darkens your skin in a few hours with no sunbed and no sun, it contains one of two things.
| What is in the tube | Needs UV? | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| DHA (the self-tan ingredient) | No | Colour develops on the surface of the skin over several hours, fades as the skin sheds |
| Bronzer or tint | No | Instant colour that sits on top, often transfers to sheets and washes off |
| Accelerator actives only | Yes | Nothing visible on its own, real colour from your own melanin once UV is added |
Plenty of sunbed creams carry DHA or a bronzer alongside their accelerator. The instant colour is the bronzer doing its job. That is not a scandal, it is a product choice, and some people like the instant result. It just means the colour you see on day one is not the accelerator working without UV. Bronzer versus no bronzer covers the trade-off.
Colour with no UV
PaintedReal colour, but it is a coating. It is self-tan, whatever the tube calls it.
Colour with UV
YoursBuilt by your skin under UV, with the accelerator supporting each session.
To be clear about what we are not saying: DHA and bronzers are not bad, and they are not a trick. They are a different category. Our point is only that if a product tans you with no UV, the ingredient doing it is a tint or DHA, so read the label and choose knowingly. How to read the label takes a minute.
Part three
Is it worth using a tan accelerator on days you are not tanning?
It will not tan you on those days. But it is not wasted either, as long as you know what it is doing. A well-made accelerator is also a conditioning cream, and conditioned skin takes colour more evenly and holds on to it for longer. Dry, flaky skin sheds the tan you have just built.
One more thing on timing. There is no build-up effect from rubbing an accelerator in for a week before your first session. Prep the skin with a gentle exfoliation a day or two before instead. How to prep.
Part four
What if you do not want UV at all?
Then a tan accelerator is the wrong product for you, and we would rather say so than sell you one. If you want colour with no sunbed and no sun, the category you are after is self-tan or gradual tan, which use DHA to colour the surface of the skin. We do not make those. Our range is built for people who tan with UV and want each session supported.
The same honesty applies to supplements. Our Tanning Gummies are a daily glow support, and a gummy alone will not tan you either. The honest answer on gummies explains why.
The honest bit
If you see a cream claiming to "tan without the sun" and it is not a self-tan, check the ingredients for DHA, a bronzer, caramel or a colour index (CI) number near the top of the list. One of them is almost always there. If none of them are, the colour is not coming from the cream.
Light does the tanning. The tube does the supporting.
