The short answer: the best DHA-free sunbed cream is one with no DHA, no erythrulose and no instant bronzer on its ingredient list, and with its tanning actives, such as tyrosine, listed above the fragrance. Every Delux cream and jelly is bronzer-free and DHA-free. For the deepest result we make in a cream, choose Island Coconut or Electric Melon (the same formula, two scents). For the most concentrated tyrosine in a light jelly, choose Sun Sauce. For your face, Lumière. For rich conditioning and a starting point, Go Dark.

Part one

What are DHA and bronzers in a sunbed cream?

A sunbed cream can add colour to your skin in two ways that have nothing to do with tanning. Both are called "bronzer" on the shelf.

DHA (dihydroxyacetone), the delayed bronzer
The active ingredient in fake tan. It reacts with the surface layer of your skin and turns it brown over a few hours. Erythrulose is its slower-developing relative and is often used alongside it. The colour sits in the top layer and leaves as that layer sheds.
Instant bronzers (caramel, henna, walnut shell, iron oxides)
Colourants that tint the skin the moment they go on, closer to a body make-up than a tan. They show straight away and wash off with water. Iron oxides appear on labels as CI 77491, CI 77492 and CI 77499.

A DHA-free, bronzer-free cream carries neither. Instead it carries ingredients that support the tan your skin makes under UV, plus skincare. What a tanning accelerator actually is goes into the detail.

Part two

Why choose a sunbed cream without DHA or bronzer?

No tint, so nothing to go orange. There is nothing in the tube that colours skin. The colour you see afterwards is your own melanin.
Nothing to transfer. No tint on the skin means nothing to come off on sheets, towels or a white top.
The colour is yours. It builds over sessions and stays as long as your own tan does, rather than washing off in the shower.

No colour in the cream. That is the point.

No DHA, no bronzer, no tint. The only colour involved is the one your skin makes.

Part three

What should you look for on the label?

Ingredients are listed in order of amount, most first. That one rule tells you almost everything.

Step 1: rule out colour. Look for DHA (dihydroxyacetone), erythrulose, caramel, henna or CI 77491, 77492 and 77499. If none are there, it is bronzer-free.
Step 2: find the tyrosine. It may be listed as tyrosine, acetyl tyrosine or N-acetyl-L-tyrosine. It is the building block your skin converts into melanin.
Step 3: check where it sits against the fragrance. Fragrance (parfum) is usually a small amount. If the tyrosine is listed below it, there is not much of it.
Step 4: count the helpers. A cofactor such as copper, a signal such as a melanin peptide, and niacinamide each do a different job in the same process.

Applied to the Delux range: in Island Coconut and Electric Melon, N-acetyl-L-tyrosine is ninth on the list and fragrance is twenty-first, with all five melanin actives above it. In Lumière, acetyl tyrosine is fifth and fragrance is twenty-fifth. In Sun Sauce, acetyl tyrosine is fifth on the label. Every list is printed in full on the product page. How to read a tanning accelerator ingredient label has the long version.

Part four

Which Delux DHA-free sunbed cream is best for you?

Five formulas, all bronzer-free and DHA-free, each built for a different job. Prices are for a single tube or pouch on deluxtanning.com. On a phone, swipe the table sideways.

Format and texture Scent Best for Size From
Island Coconut Next-Gen cream, light, absorbs in minutes, no residue Coconut The deepest result we make in a cream. Five melanin actives on a skincare base 200ml £30
Electric Melon Same Next-Gen formula as Island Coconut Watermelon ice Everything Island Coconut does, if you would rather not smell of coconut 200ml £30
Sun Sauce Water-based jelly, no oil, glossy finish Pineapple Sunbed regulars who want our most concentrated tyrosine and niacinamide in the lightest feel 200ml pouch £28
Go Dark Rich, buttery conditioning cream Bubblegum, cherry or coconut Dry or reactive skin, and a gentle starting point. Works by conditioning, doubles as a moisturiser 200ml £27
Lumière Light face cream with a luminous finish, sits under make-up Vanilla Face, jawline and neck 50ml £22
Island Coconut and Electric Melon: the full stack
The same Next-Gen formula with one ingredient for each stage of melanin production: N-acetyl-L-tyrosine (the building block), MelanoBronze (the signal), copper gluconate (the enzyme's mineral), acetyl hexapeptide-1 (a melanin peptide) and niacinamide (moving pigment to the surface). Underneath sits aloe, shea, squalane, ceramide NP and ectoin. The scent is the only difference between them.
Sun Sauce: two actives, turned up
A jelly with no oil phase, carrying twice the level of acetyl tyrosine and niacinamide found in the Next-Gen creams. It does not carry MelanoBronze, copper or the peptide. Use a 5p-sized amount per area: there is no oil to carry the excess, so more just sits on the surface.
Go Dark: the original
A short ingredient list built around shea, cocoa, coconut, oat and jojoba. It has no tyrosine, by design: it came first and it works by conditioning, so skin is soft and even and holds colour. Many people use it between sessions and a Next-Gen cream or Sun Sauce before them.
Lumière: built for the face
Acetyl tyrosine, MelanoBronze and acetyl hexapeptide-1 at levels chosen for thinner facial skin, on a lighter base with ceramide NP, hyaluronate and squalane. A pea-sized amount per area. The light-reflecting finish is immediate; the colour builds through your sessions.

Sun Sauce: a water-based jelly. No oil, no DHA, no bronzer.

Part five

What won't a DHA-free sunbed cream do?

The honest box

It will not give you colour without UV. There is nothing in it that colours skin, so on its own it does nothing you can see. It supports the tan your skin makes during a session or in the sun.

It will not give you colour tonight. Most people notice a difference in two to three sessions and a proper base in two to three weeks. If you need to look tanned by Friday from a standing start, a bronzer is the tool for that job.

It is not a sunscreen. No Delux cream or jelly contains SPF. Outdoors, apply it first, let it absorb, then wear a separate broad-spectrum sunscreen over the top.

UK Health Security Agency guidance on GOV.UK is that sunbeds are for over-18s only, that you should not use one if you have very fair skin or burn easily, and that you should ask for guidance and limit your use. A cream does not change any of that.

Quick answers

Frequently asked

What is the best DHA-free sunbed cream in the UK?
Look for a cream with no DHA, erythrulose or instant bronzer, and with tyrosine listed above the fragrance. Every Delux cream and jelly meets the first test. Island Coconut and Electric Melon carry five melanin actives above the fragrance line, Sun Sauce has the highest tyrosine level in the range, Lumière is built for the face and Go Dark is a rich conditioning cream.
Is DHA-free the same as bronzer-free?
Not always. DHA is one kind of bronzer, the delayed kind. A cream can be DHA-free and still contain instant bronzers such as caramel, henna or iron oxides. Check the label for both. Every Delux cream and jelly is free of both.
Will a DHA-free sunbed cream make me orange?
A cream with no DHA and no bronzer has no tint, so there is nothing in it to turn you orange. The colour it helps build is your own melanin.
Does a DHA-free cream tan you without a sunbed or sun?
No. It contains nothing that colours skin, so it needs UV to do anything visible. It supports the tan your skin makes during exposure.
Do Delux sunbed creams contain SPF?
No. Outdoors, apply the cream first, let it absorb, then wear a separate broad-spectrum sunscreen over the top.
How long before I see results?
Most people notice deeper colour within two to three sessions when they use it every time, and a proper base in two to three weeks of regular use.

Colour that is yours.

No DHA, no bronzer, nothing on the surface. Pick the formula that suits your skin and your session.
