Is a jelly better than a cream?

Tanning jelly is having a moment, and the word gets used loosely. This guide explains what a tanning jelly actually is, how it differs from a cream or an oil, what to check on the label, and when we would tell you to buy a cream instead. We make one, so we will show our working.

The short answer. The best tanning jelly is a water-based gel with real tanning actives near the top of its ingredient list and no bronzer or DHA, so the colour you see is the colour your skin builds. Our pick is Delux Sun Sauce, a bronzer-free, DHA-free jelly with niacinamide fourth and acetyl tyrosine fifth on the label, a glossy finish that is not sticky when used thin, and a pineapple scent. A jelly is not better than a cream. It is lighter. Choose a jelly if you want something that sinks straight in with no cream feel; choose a cream if you want rich conditioning and a scent that lingers.
Format is about feel. Jelly, cream and oil can all carry tanning actives. The texture decides how it goes on, not how well it works.
The label decides the rest. Ingredients are listed in order of amount. Find the tyrosine and see what sits above it.
Thin wins. Every format works in the top layer of skin. A thick coat just sits on the surface.

Part one

What is a tanning jelly, and how is it different from a cream or an oil?

A tanning jelly is a water-based gel. There is no butter and no oil phase holding it together, so it goes on clear, spreads fast and absorbs to a glossy finish rather than a creamy one. A cream is an emulsion of water and oils or butters, which is why it feels richer and conditions as it goes. A tanning oil is mostly oil, which is why it feels slick and stays on the surface for longer.

Three textures on dark slate: a white cream swirl, a clear golden tanning jelly and a pool of amber oil

Left to right: cream, jelly, oil. Same job, three very different feels.

Jelly Cream Oil
Base Water Water plus butters or oils Mostly oil
Feel Light, clear Rich, cushioned Slick, runny
Finish Glossy, sinks in when thin Soft, conditioned Shiny, sits on top
Amount 5p per area (Sun Sauce) 10p per area Varies
Suits No cream feel, warm days Dry skin, scent lovers Slick-feel fans

If you want the longer version of jelly against oil, tanning jelly, explained covers it.

Part two

Is a tanning jelly better than a cream?

No, and anyone who says one format is simply better is selling the format. What matters is what is in it and whether you will actually use it thin, every session. Jelly wins on lightness: nothing to rub in for ages, no cream feel, and no oil phase to leave a film. Cream wins on conditioning: butters and oils soften skin as they go, and a cream carries scent better.

Water-based, glossy, and in Sun Sauce's case the most concentrated formula we make.

A jelly is not stronger because it is a jelly. It is stronger if the label says so.

Part three

What should you look for in a tanning jelly?

Actives near the top. Acetyl tyrosine is the building block your skin turns into melanin under UV. On many labels it sits below the fragrance. Look for it in the first handful of ingredients.
No bronzer, no DHA, if you want your own colour. Bronzers and DHA stain the surface. That can look instant, but it washes off or fades, and bronzers can transfer onto towels and sheets.
A water-based formula. If the first ingredients are oils, it is an oil with a jelly name.
Honest usage advice. Jelly needs less than cream. A brand that tells you to apply generously is selling you more pouches.
Clear SPF wording. If a jelly has no SPF, the page should say so. Sun Sauce has none, so outdoors you need a separate sunscreen over the top.

Part four

Delux Sun Sauce, in detail

Sun Sauce is our tanning jelly: a 200ml pouch of water-based, bronzer-free, DHA-free jelly with a tropical pineapple scent, made for sunbeds and outdoor tanning. It carries the highest levels of acetyl tyrosine and niacinamide in the Delux range, twice the level in our Next-Gen creams, in the lightest base we make.

  • 5
Acetyl tyrosineFifth, straight after water, glycerin, dipropylene glycol and niacinamide. The building block your skin converts into melanin.
  • 6
PanthenolPro-vitamin B5. Draws water into the top layer so skin feels comfortable, not tight.

BetaineA water-loving conditioner doing the job oils do in a cream.

What is the finish like?
The jelly glides on and melts into a smooth, glossy finish. Used thin, it absorbs without stickiness. Used thick, there is no oil to carry the excess, so it sits on the surface and feels tacky. That is the one thing to learn.
Why a pouch?
You squeeze out what you need and nothing more, it stays sealed until you use it, and it fits in a gym bag.
Does it have a colourant?
Sun Sauce has no bronzer and no DHA, so nothing in it is there to colour your skin. Whatever colour you build is your own, over sessions, under UV. The full Sun Sauce ingredient guide goes through the whole label.

Part five

Should you choose Sun Sauce or a Delux cream?

All four are bronzer-free and DHA-free. The difference is format, feel and what is in the formula.

What it is Choose it if
Sun Sauce Water-based jelly with our highest acetyl tyrosine and niacinamide. 5p per area. You want our most concentrated formula and no cream feel
Island Coconut Next-Gen cream, five melanin actives including MelanoBronze. 10p per area. You want the deepest result we make in a cream, and coconut
Electric Melon The same Next-Gen formula in watermelon ice. 10p per area. You want the Next-Gen cream in a fresher scent
Go Dark Buttery conditioning cream: shea, cocoa, coconut, oat, jojoba. No tyrosine, by design. 10p per area. You are starting out, have dry skin, or want the richest finish

Still torn? Cream or jelly: which Delux formula? has the side-by-side.

Part six

How do you use a tanning jelly?

Prep: exfoliate the day before, then apply to clean, dry skin.
Amount: a 5p-sized amount per area, half what you would use of a cream. Spread thin until it disappears.
If it feels tacky: you have used too much. Less next time.
Sunbed: apply just before your session and stick to the time your salon sets.
Outdoors: jelly first, let it absorb, then a broad spectrum sunscreen over the top.
After: wash your hands.

What Sun Sauce won't do

It will not protect you from the sun. There is no SPF in it. It will not give you instant colour, because there is no bronzer and no DHA; colour builds over your sessions. It does nothing without UV. And it will not forgive a heavy hand. One verified reviewer put it plainly: "I'd put a little too much on my neck and it was sticky after." Another said they "put on way too much first time" before finding "a little goes a long way".

If you want a rich, buttery cream, this is not it. Buy a cream. For general guidance on UV, follow your salon's session times and the sunbed advice published on GOV.UK.

Quick answers

Frequently asked

What is the best tanning jelly in the UK?
Look for a water-based jelly with acetyl tyrosine near the top of the ingredient list and no bronzer or DHA. Delux Sun Sauce fits that brief: niacinamide fourth, acetyl tyrosine fifth, bronzer-free, DHA-free, in a 200ml pineapple-scented pouch.
Is tanning jelly better than tanning cream?
Neither is better by format. A jelly is lighter and absorbs to a glossy finish with no cream feel. A cream conditions more and carries scent better. Choose on feel, then check the label for actives.
Can you use tanning jelly on a sunbed?
Yes. Sun Sauce is made for indoor and outdoor tanning. Apply a 5p-sized amount per area just before your session and follow the salon's session times.
Why is my tanning jelly sticky?
Almost always too much product. A jelly has no oil to carry the excess, so it sits on the surface. Use a 5p-sized amount per area and spread it thin until it disappears.
Does Sun Sauce contain bronzer or DHA?
No. Sun Sauce has no bronzer and no DHA, so nothing in it is there to colour your skin. Any colour you build is your own, over sessions, under UV.
Does tanning jelly have SPF?
Sun Sauce does not contain SPF. Outdoors, apply it first, let it absorb, then put a separate broad spectrum sunscreen over the top.
