Tanning oil is having a moment again, largely thanks to the tanmaxxing trend filling feeds with oiled-up sunbathers. So it is a fair question: if you want the deepest colour, should you reach for a tanning oil or a tan accelerator? Here is the straight answer.

Most tanning oils do one thing: they sit on the surface and intensify the sun's effect on your skin. There are usually no meaningful active ingredients, no skin conditioning to speak of, and most contain no SPF at all, which is why they are a staple of the riskier end of the tanmaxxing trend. The result they push you towards is faster reddening, and a burn is not a tan. It sets your colour back.
