Coconut Oil for Tanning: The Myth, and the Smarter Coconut Route

Coconut Oil for Tanning: The Myth, and the Smarter Coconut Route - Delux Tanners
Tanning guide

Coconut oil for tanning.
The myth, and the smarter coconut route.

Coconut oil might be the most beloved tanning shortcut of them all. It smells like holidays, it makes skin gleam on a lounger, and generations of tanners swear it deepens their colour. Here is the honest breakdown of what it does, what it does not, and how to keep the coconut without the compromise.

Coconut oil moisturises and adds shine, which flatters existing colour.
It does not accelerate your tan and offers essentially no sun protection.
Pure oil is also a problem on sunbeds.
The modern route keeps the coconut and adds the actives.

Part one

What coconut oil actually does for a tan

Credit where due: coconut oil is a decent emollient. It softens skin and leaves a glossy sheen, and because hydrated, gleaming skin shows colour better, it can make the tan you already have look richer. That is the entire trick. It does nothing to help your skin build colour, and its natural sun protection is so minimal it should be treated as none, so lounging in strong sun wearing only coconut oil is the classic route to a burn, and a burn is not a tan. Pure oil also brings the usual salon problem, which we cover here.

Coconut oil makes the tan you already have look richer. It does nothing to help you build more of it.

Part two

The smarter coconut route

Here is the thing: you do not have to give up the coconut, you just want it inside a formula that earns its place. That is exactly what Island Coconut is. Coconut oil is in the formula, doing the conditioning job it is genuinely good at, alongside shea butter, squalane and ceramide, but the base is water and aloe rather than oil, so it is silky rather than greasy and sunbed-friendly rather than banned. And on top of the conditioning sits what coconut oil never had: niacinamide and N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine supporting your skin's natural melanin process, with copper gluconate and a melanin-supporting peptide backing them up. The tropical icon, rebuilt as an actual accelerator, with no DHA, no bronzer and no orange.

Part three

How to run it on holiday

Apply Island Coconut to clean, dry skin before your time in the sun, wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen over the top since no accelerator contains SPF, reapply both after swimming, and moisturise each evening. Build gradually through the trip, our holiday tanning guide has the full timeline, and you will come home with the deep, even colour the pure-oil crowd is still chasing.
