What the UV index actually means
for your tan.

Thanks to the tanmaxxing trend, the UV index has gone from a weather app footnote to the number half of TikTok plans their day around. Most of the videos are using it backwards. Here is what the UV index actually tells you, and how to use it like someone who wants a tan that lasts.

1-2low UV
3-5moderate, where colour builds best
6-7high, shorten your time
8+very high, burn faster, not tan better
The UV index measures how quickly UV can damage skin, not how well you will tan.
Higher UV mostly means you burn faster, and a burn is not a tan.
Moderate exposure, repeated consistently, builds the deepest colour.
Sunscreen and sensible timing are not optional at high UV.

Part one

What the number actually measures

The UV index is a scale of how strong the sun's ultraviolet radiation is at a given time and place: low at 1 to 2, moderate at 3 to 5, high at 6 to 7, very high at 8 and up. What it tells you is how quickly unprotected skin can be damaged. What it does not tell you is how good your tan will be, and that is the misunderstanding driving people to deliberately lie out at peak UV.

Part two

Why chasing a high UV number backfires

Your skin builds colour at its own biological pace. Blasting it with very high UV does not speed that process up, it overshoots it, and the overshoot is a burn: red, sore, peeling skin that sheds the colour you were trying to build. The people with the deepest, most even tans are working with moderate exposure and consistency, not maximum intensity. If you take one thing from this post: a higher number means burn faster, not tan better.

A higher number means burn faster. It does not mean tan better.

Part three

How to actually use the UV index

Treat it as a pacing tool. At moderate UV, sensible sessions with sunscreen build colour steadily. At high and very high UV, shorten your time, reapply sunscreen properly, seek shade through the peak hours, and let repeated short exposures do the work across the week. Pair that with a tan accelerator applied before you head out, ours support your skin's natural melanin process with no DHA and no bronzer, and every session counts for more. Island Coconut is the one to reach for on holiday, and remember an accelerator contains no SPF, so sunscreen goes on top.

Part four

The routine that beats the number

Prep your skin, apply your accelerator, respect the index, moisturise after. That is the whole game, and our guides on building a holiday tan and prepping for deeper colour walk it through step by step.

Work with the sun, not against it.

Build colour the way that lasts. Island Coconut before you head out, sunscreen on top, and let the week do the work.
