Electric Melon: The Full Guide to Every Ingredient

Electric Melon: The Full Guide to Every Ingredient - Delux Tanners
The full product guide

Electric Melon.
Every ingredient, and why.

Our reputation was built on one thing: transparency about what is in the tube. Every ingredient in a Delux cream has a job, and if it cannot do that job at the level we include it, it is not included. No trace-amount actives put there to be mentioned on the box, no fillers, and nothing on the website that is not printed on the label. It is why we are one of the only tanning brands that will go through the whole list and explain why every ingredient earns its place. Here is that list for Electric Melon, our newest Next-Gen cream.

24ingredients, every one explained below
5melanin-supporting actives
Aug 26launched, on the Next-Gen formula from day one
0DHA, bronzer, colourant or tint
Same formula as Island Coconut and Bubblegum Mania. Electric Melon is the fresh, clean scent on the Next-Gen base. We do not change the chemistry to sell a flavour.
Every active above the fragrance line. Read the order on any tube and you will know what it really is.
No colour in the tube. Electric Melon helps your skin respond to UV. Nothing in it tints.
A 10p-sized amount per area. Thin, even, absorbed. That is the whole application.

Part one

Why the Next-Gen creams share one formula

A lot of ranges quietly change the formula between scents. The flagship gets the actives; the flavours get a lighter version and the same claims. We think that is a bad deal for the person who prefers melon to coconut, so we did the opposite. The Next-Gen base was finished once, properly, and every scent sits on it unchanged. Electric Melon launched in August on exactly the formula below. If you have read the Island Coconut guide, the ingredients will be familiar. That is the point.

Pick Electric Melon because you like how it smells. Not because you are hoping it does something the others do not. It does everything they do.

Part two

The base: the first six

What the cream is made of before any active goes in. Electric Melon feels cool and light on application, and that is these six doing their job.

Ingredient 1Aqua (water)First
A water-based cream that starts with water. Worth saying because some tubes in this market list none at all, which tells you the list is not the formula.
Ingredient 2Aloe barbadensis leaf juiceSecond
Hydrating and cooling, and second on the list rather than last. Aloe is why Electric Melon feels fresh going on and calm coming off a sunbed.
Ingredient 3Shea butterThird
Softens skin and slows water loss. Conditioned skin holds colour; dry skin sheds it. Shea is the difference between a tan that lasts three weeks and one that flakes in ten days.
Ingredient 4Coconut oilFourth
Light emollient held in a water-based emulsion, so you get the slip without the grease. No residue on the acrylic, nothing sitting under your sunscreen.
Ingredient 5GlycerinFifth
The humectant. Draws water into the top layer of skin and keeps it there between sessions.
Ingredient 6Caprylic/capric triglycerideSixth
Coconut-derived, lighter than the oil, spreads the cream evenly and sinks in. It does the job a silicone does in most sunbed creams, without sitting on the surface afterwards.

Part three

The five actives

Your skin makes melanin in a chain: raw material, enzyme, mineral, signal, transfer. One ingredient per link. All five sit above the fragrance, and none is there just to be on the box.

Raw materialN-Acetyl-L-TyrosineTop ten
The amino acid skin converts into melanin, in the stable acetylated form that survives a water-based cream and absorbs well. Top ten on the list. On most competitor tubes tyrosine sits after the fragrance, which tells you how much is there.
SignalMelanoBronzeLicensed complex
A licensed complex from Solabia, from monk's pepper fruit extract, that supports the signalling which switches pigment production on when UV arrives. Sooner, more even response per session. Needs light to work; not a self-tan. On the label under its INCI name.
MineralCopper gluconateMid list
Tyrosinase, the converting enzyme, is copper-dependent. Copper gluconate makes copper available in a gentle form. Small amount by design; it is a cofactor.
ReinforcementAcetyl hexapeptide-1Mid list
A peptide that mimics the body's own start-production messenger, backing up what MelanoBronze primes. The most expensive class of ingredient in the tube and the rarest on a sunbed shelf.
TransferNiacinamideTop ten
Vitamin B3, top ten. Supports the barrier and is involved in moving melanin from the cells that make it to the ones you see. Half the tanning process happens after the pigment is made; this is for that half.

A typical fresh-scent sunbed cream

1
Tyrosine, low on the listMenthol for a cooling feelSignal, cofactor, transfer

One active. Cool feeling from menthol, which is a sensation, not a result.

VS

Electric Melon

5
Acetyl tyrosineMelanoBronzeCopperPeptideNiacinamide

Five links in the chain. The fresh feel comes from aloe, not menthol.

Part four

Skin support: the other nine

UV stresses skin. These nine are the skincare half of Electric Melon and the reason it doubles as a body cream.

Panthenol (pro-vitamin B5): calms, conditions, eases post-session tightness.
Squalane (olive-derived): a skin-identical light oil for the barrier, absorbs with no residue.
Tocopherol (vitamin E): antioxidant against UV-generated free radicals; keeps the plant oils fresh.
Ascorbyl glucoside (stable vitamin C): a form of vitamin C that lasts in a cream, for antioxidant support and even tone.
Beta-glucan: oat-derived, deeply hydrating, one of the gentlest soothers in skincare.
Ceramide NP: rebuilds the mortar between skin cells that UV depletes, so the barrier and the tan both hold.
Ectoin: helps cells cope with UV and heat stress. Rare in tanning creams, deliberate in ours.
Liquorice root extract (glabridin): anti-inflammatory and evening, so colour builds uniform.
Caffeine: mild antioxidant and firming support, for skin rather than a tingle, low among the actives on purpose.

Part five

The last four

Fragrance, which is the melon, below every active. Carbomer, the thickener that gives the cream its body. Phenoxyethanol and ethylhexylglycerin, the preservative system a water-based cream needs. Citric acid or sodium hydroxide, to set the pH at skin's own slightly acidic level. That is everything. Nothing on this page that is not on the tube.

Part six

What to expect, week by week

Sessions one and two: priming. The base is conditioning the skin and the stack is getting to work. Do not expect much to see yet.
Sessions two to three: most people notice the first real difference here, warmer and deeper than the same session would have given with nothing on.
Weeks two to three: with regular sessions, a proper even base. Drop to maintenance and keep moisturising.
After: the shea, ceramide and squalane in the base are why the colour holds. Daily moisturiser keeps it.

The routine itself: exfoliate the day before, clean dry skin, then a 10p-sized amount per area spread thin and even until it disappears. The actives absorb into the top layer in minutes, so more just sits on the surface and ends up on the bed. Follow the salon's times on a sunbed; outdoors, sunscreen over the top and reapplied every two hours. The full day-by-day is in your first two weeks with Delux.

Part seven

Versus the shelf

Versus a cooling or fresh-scent sunbed cream. Most get the cool feel from menthol, which is a sensation on the surface. Electric Melon gets it from aloe, which is hydration. And they usually run one active under a lot of fragrance; we run five above it.
Versus a bronzer lotion. Instant colour from DHA or a tint that washes off, streaks and goes orange over-applied. Electric Melon gives nothing on day one and your own colour by session three.
Versus a tanning oil. Surface intensity, salon bans, nothing for the skin. Electric Melon is water-based and welcome in every salon.
Versus Island Coconut and Bubblegum Mania. Identical formula. Choose the scent you want to smell of for the next three weeks.

What Electric Melon is not

Not instant, because there is no colour in it. Not a sunscreen; wear one over it outdoors. Not a tingle, and not menthol-cooled. And not a self-tan: every active here needs UV. If you want colour with no sun or sunbed, that is a different product and we do not make one.

Quick answers

Frequently asked

Is Electric Melon different from Island Coconut?
Only the scent. The formula, base and five-part melanin stack are identical across the Next-Gen creams.
Does Electric Melon contain bronzer or DHA?
No. No colourant of any kind. The colour you build is your own.
Does the cooling feel mean it has menthol?
No. The fresh feel comes from the aloe base and the light texture. There is no menthol and no tingle agent.
Can I use it on a sunbed and in the sun?
Both. Water-based and kind to acrylics indoors; outdoors, wear a separate sunscreen over it because it contains no SPF.
How much should I apply?
A 10p-sized amount per area, spread thin and even. More does not work better; it sits on the surface. A 200ml tube used this way lasts weeks of regular sessions.
How quickly does it work?
Most people notice a difference within two to three sessions and a proper base within two to three weeks of regular use.
